A 'farewell' concert
Thursday, May 12, 2005

WAYLAND - Katie Wang, a senior at Wayland High School, will give a "farewell" concert featuring solo performances on both piano and Chinese dulcimer on Saturday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Wayland High School's Little Theater, 264 Old Connecticut Path, Wayland. The concert is free and open to the public, and is Wang's graduation "thank you" to her friends, colleagues and mentors in eastern Massachusetts.
The program will begin with piano works by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Liszt.
"I am confident of Katie's command of these demanding pieces," says Inga Magid of Lexington, Wang's piano teacher for the last three years. "She has an artist's feel for the music, and the technical mastery to bring that feeling to the audience. The audience will love her performance!"
Wang will then play a selection of traditional pieces for the Chinese hammered dulcimer, closing with a Mozart piece arranged by her dulcimer instructor, Mr. Zhentian Zhang.
"Mr. Zhang has been very supportive of me as a musician," Wang says. "Without that unwavering support, I could not have reached my goal of being able to give a solo concert."
Wang's musical studies began with the piano, then expanded to include the violin, Chinese hammered dulcimer and Chinese lute (pipa). She is an award-winning pianist, a first-chair violinist in the Wayland High School orchestra, and an award-winning dulcimer player.
Wang is section leader in the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association's Chinese Music Ensemble, and has recorded two CDs on dulcimer, one of solo music, and one of duets. She has performed in the New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall as well as MIT's Kresge Auditorium, and gives frequent dulcimer demonstrations.
At Wayland High School, she is a member of the National Honor Society, the school orchestra and the varsity girls lacrosse team. She is also a teaching assistant at the Lexington Chinese School in the bilingual preschool class, and tutors violin for beginners from elementary schools in Wayland.
Wang will attend Stanford University in the fall.
Her final piano solo performance in the Boston area will be May 22, when she will perform the beautiful and technically challenging "Ricordanza" by Franz Liszt at the annual spring recital for Inga Magid's private students in Lexington.
